One of our primary goals at SolarTown is to educate consumers on solar energy in general and solar energy products in particular. We know that you have perused the over thousand solar energy products that we are selling. We hope that you have also spent some time at SolarTown’s Learning Center to learn about solar power products. We know that our customers like our Learning Center, but as the number of articles has ballooned, it has become more unwieldy to navigate. We have put in a new interface to allow you to click on the category that you are looking for.

We are pleased that we have a contract vehicle for SolarTown to sell solar power products to the government. We are pleased to offer solar ovens, solar refrigerators, solar freezers, and solar refrigerator and freezer packages, and we will be adding more products to our GSA schedule. What do you do if you are protesting corporate greed in the Nation’s Capital and spending the night in McPherson Square? Do you fire up that old diesel generator that is going to contribute to global warming? Surely not, when there are solar energy alternatives. One of the protesters visited SolarTown’s offices.What solar power products do you have for me, she asked. Like a lot of customers who call us, she wanted to find out what solar energy products you can use off the grid. She purchased a portable solar shower—make that two, she said. It is sunny today in Washington, DC, but unseasonably cold. So if you want to see some protestors across from the White House bathing in warm water from a portable solar shower, you should get down to McPherson Square today. Dress warmly.

This past weekend, homeowners opened their solar homes to those wanting to catch a glimpse of the future of home energy. We hope that you were able to attend one of the 648 tours throughout the country. I took my kids to visit some of the solar homes in Washington, DC and Virginia and enjoyed the display of solar electric, solar thermal and even passive solar. My kids especially enjoyed the solar cookies from the solar ovens. The solar home tour showed just how far solar applications have come and how new technology is reshaping the world around us. We only hope that next year we will see more innovations and more homes on the solar home tours, and we hope that we’ll get an invite to the White House to see Obama’s new solar energy system.

Spring is in the air in Washington, DC after a long winter of snow and blizzards. People have finally retrieved their snowbound cars and are back jogging in the park and tending their gardens. This is the perfect time to think about taking solar outdoors. As the weather is getting better, we are getting a lot of inquiries about how to size your solar RV kit or your marine solar kit. Like sizing other solar energy systems, it all depends on what your energy needs are—not on how big your RV or boat is, but how much energy you need on your RV or boat. You need to know what your energy usage is before you purchase a solar RV kit or marine solar kit. Whatever solar energy system you use on your boat or RV, one thing is for sure, you are going to enjoy it much more than if you had to listen to a noisy generator as you are trying to enjoy and appreciate the outdoors.

We all mourn the loss of life in Haiti. The numbers are staggering. Possibly as many as 200,000 people died in the earthquake. And for the roughly 2 million who remain homeless, the challenges are just beginning. Rebuilding will take many years—and that is just to restore Haiti to the impoverished mess that it was before the earthquake. As assistance pours in, many opportunities arise to help people with basic needs by going solar. For those living without electricity in Haiti and elsewhere, solar can be a lifeline. Look at the broad range of solar products available on the market today and you will find what will be a lifeline not only to the earthquake victims in Haiti, but also to vast populations in the developing world.
