SolarTown has moved to its new offices in Washington, D.C. and we will be celebrating with an open house on August 10, 2011.
We are very pleased that SolarTown is now part of historic Columbia Heights community. This gentrifying area is a testament to urban renewal. If you lived in Washington, D.C. ten years ago, Columbia Heights is not one of the areas that would spring to mind if you wanted to go shopping. Many would not even hazard to walk in Columbia Heights. That has now all changed for the better.
Take a look at the new Tivoli Square at the center of this vibrant area. Take a close look and yes, you will see street lights made out of solar panels. These solar powered lights aren’t the utilitarian looking solar street lights that some may not find attractive. These are solar sculptures that showcase the plaza streaming with kids romping through the fountains. You don’t want to hide these solar panels, because they are part of the architecture. If someone were to tell you that solar panels are not aesthetically pleasing, well, take a look at these solar panels.
Columbia Heights, which is just off the Green Line and centered at the intersection of 14th and Park, is now a hub of activity. Columbia Heights is situated in a Historically Underutilized Business Zones (HUBZone), which means that SolarTown, if it meets certain other eligibility requirements, will be able to compete favorably for government contracts. So if you are working for a government agency and want to purchase solar energy products, SolarTown should be your vendor of first choice.
A trend that has hit all of Washington, D.C. is the bicycle way of life. Columbia Heights has a number of bike-share stands, and on 14th Street, there is a bike lane. Some of us at SolarTown are biking to work this summer—even though this July was the hottest July on record.
We hope that you will be able to join us for our open house. Weather permitting, we may be baking some cookies in our solar oven and open our doors to those who want to see our new abode. So if you are around, please stop by our new home. Check out the SolarTown Facebook page for details.
